Vanderbilt University Β· Class of 2028

Hi, I'm Delaney.

I study economics and political science, with a minor in legal studies, and I'm working toward law school. Right now I'm a research assistant on NATO defense policy and a legal intern in Nashville. This spring I'll be studying abroad in London.

About me

Law, policy, and how institutions really work

I'm a 20-year-old junior at Vanderbilt majoring in Economics and Political Science with a minor in Legal Studies. I'm interested in how the law and politics shape people's lives in practice. I've seen that in a personal injury firm, a statewide anti-hunger nonprofit, and an entertainment law office.

I also like work that mixes policy with data. On a research team studying NATO, I build AI tools that read thousands of defense documents and track how countries change what they buy for their militaries.

Research

Teaching AI to read NATO defense policy

Since 2025 I've worked with Dr. J AndrΓ©s Gannon in Vanderbilt's Research on Conflict and Collective Action lab. The lab studies how NATO allies, especially smaller ones, shape their militaries to be useful to the alliance. One example is former Soviet-bloc states rebuilding their forces after the Cold War.

The source material is huge. Countries publish defense white papers, strategic reviews, and national security strategies, often hundreds of pages long and in many languages. As head RA, I build the AI pipeline that reads them for us. It splits each document into passages, finds every mention of a weapons system or procurement decision, and links it to the country, year, and stated reason.

  • 241,857 document passages processed
  • 10,231 NATO-relevant passages pulled out for analysis
  • 31 allies tracked from 2014 to 2025

I also manage the project's GitHub repository. That means assigning work, reviewing teammates' code, and keeping the analysis reproducible.

Who's meeting NATO's 2% guideline?

Number of allies spending at least 2% of GDP on defense, by year. The average share rose from 1.37% in 2014 to 2.51% in 2025.

From my analysis of NATO defense expenditure data. 2025 includes the 30 allies with reported figures.

Travel

A month in China, and London next

I spent all of May 2026 in China, from the Great Wall outside Beijing to the old streets and gardens of Shanghai. This spring I'm studying abroad in London.

Next stop: London, Spring 2027

I'll be studying abroad in London. I'm looking forward to seeing a different legal system up close, and to a lot of museums, markets, and weekend trips.
